CAN’T-FAIL TIPS AND PLANS TO HELP YOU EAT RIGHT, CONTROL YOUR WEIGHT, AND STAY ENERGIZED ON EVERY RUN

Many American women have an adversarial relationship with food. Among women runners, it’s more like war.

Many women runners think that if they could just lose a little more weight, they’d be faster. Sure, this is true sometimes, if they’re carrying a lot of extra pounds. But too many women don’t know when to switch that thinking off. They don’t recognize when this thought process becomes counterproductive and even dangerous.

Making this worse, this “if I could just lose weight, I’d be fine” thinking often morphs into a “food is bad” mentality. And for runners especially, food is not bad. Food is good. Food is absolutely essential for providing the energy you need to run and do everything else you do each day.

My own relationship with food has been a bit rocky in the past—I don’t deny that. But I’ve learned a lot about myself, and about food and nutrition as well, and I think I’m in a really good place now. I’m excited about all the great advice in this chapter. It comes from some of the country’s leading sports nutritionists and weight-control experts.
